New Yorkers United Against Mass Deportation Rally
Passed 24-0-0 by the Amalgamated Council
On December 19th, 2024 ALAA endorsed this action and four legislative bills to be in public solidarity with immigrant communities and against deportations, immigration detention, and U.S. militarism and militarization. The Trump administration aims to deport millions of immigrants through countless executive policies, including by building more detention centers and ordering the U.S. military and deputizing local police and the National Guard to arrest, detain, and deport people who the federal government alleges are not U.S. citizens and are unlawfully present in the United States. Learn more here, here, and here.
The rally and press conference aim to bring together advocates, allies across movements, legislators, and immigrant communities throughout New York State to send a clear message: the legislature and Governor Hochul must act now and pass critical legislation to protect New York state from Trump’s deportation agenda. The proposed legislation and state-wide coalitions include:
New York for All Act (S987/A5686): Prohibits the use of state resources for federal immigration enforcement, restricts the disclosure of New York residents’ sensitive information to ICE and CBP, prohibits 287(g) agreements that deputize local police to enforce federal immigration laws, and requires ICE to present a judicial warrant to access non-public areas of government property.
Dignity Not Detention Act (S306/A4354): Ends and prohibits ICE detention contracts with local jails. This bill has been endorsed by the Region 9A UAW Cap Council.
Access to Representation Act (S999A/A170A): Enacts the first state right to counsel for immigrants.
Clemency Justice Act (S222A/A155A): Creates transparency around the gubernatorial pardon and clemency process in New York State.
