Solidarity with Trans Youth and Adolescents
WHEREAS Donald Trump has issued an unlawful1 and discriminatory executive order asserting that they will not support life-saving gender-affirming care for trans youth and adolescents under the age of 192;
WHEREAS this executive order is in direct violation of scientific consensus surrounding the life-saving nature of gender-affirming care for trans youth (3);
WHEREAS the Association of Legal Advocates and Attorneys (ALAA) has consistently fought for our trans community, including by winning gender neutral restrooms in Legal Aid Society offices (4);
WHEREAS major New York hospitals including NYU Langone5 and New York-Presbyterian (6) have begun to cancel appointments or otherwise indicate that they may no longer provide gender-affirming care for trans youth and adolescents;
WHEREAS ALAA recognize that descent into fascism often involves weaponization of the most marginalized members of society,
WHEREAS some of the first violent acts of Nazism included violent repression of trans and queer individuals, including a massive book burning at the world’s first clinic for transgender individuals on May 10, 1933 (7);
Be it resolved that ALAA shall:
Rebuke all efforts to demonize trans individuals and stands strongly in solidarity with our trans members, clients, and community members;
Call on all United States hospitals and healthcare providers to continue providing gender-affirming care to all trans folks, including youth and adolescents, in accordance with current medical standards of care; and
Continue to stand against the United States’ rapid descent into fascism, including by not allowing trans youth and adolescents to be unjustly and illegally targeted.
Do everything in its power to support those affected by anti-trans executive orders.
